SOFIA'S STORY:

Hi Everybody!

It’s here, it’s real—I’m out of the woods and having ZERO symptoms now. Truly a miracle! After 20 years of prescription drugs, I am now completely drug-free and feeling better than I ever have physically, mentally, and emotionally.

I owe a big thanks to my husband, who stuck by me through all nine months of my taper and encouraged me to keep going even when I thought I couldn’t. Thanks also to the lovely people on this website who supported me during the last stages of withdrawal.

Symptoms I Experienced:

  • Electric shocks throughout my body, feeling like a metal fork stabbing my brain and sending electrodes through my body—very painful!
  • Shaking, trembling, and constant tremors.
  • Nausea and vomiting (lost a lot of weight, worried about getting enough calories, relied on Powerade and Snickers).
  • Headaches and migraines.
  • Hot/cold flashes—heating pads and ice packs were my best friends, felt like I had constant fever/chills.
  • Itching and burning skin, felt like my skin was on fire—literally screamed and cried, covered myself in ice packs.
  • Teeth hurt constantly, felt like they were made of metal.
  • Insomnia (used Ambien initially but had to taper off that too, endured night terrors and hallucinations).
  • Distorted sense of smell and taste, everything tasted metallic.
  • Intense irrational fears (agoraphobia, paranoia).
  • Heart palpitations, like an engine constantly revving.
  • Chest pain, pulling sensation and tightness across my chest—relieved only slightly by heating pads.
  • Sensitivity to light (wore sunglasses day and night, even indoors; screens were too bright even on the lowest setting).
  • Sensitivity to sound, with every noise feeling explosive and painful.
  • Nerve sensitivity, like my nerves were bare wires—extremely painful if bumped.
  • Fear of losing my mind, inability to think or organize thoughts, violent feelings, and fear of hurting loved ones.
  • Weakness, unable to care for myself (couldn’t prepare food, shower, dress).
  • Flu-like symptoms that lingered.
  • Vertigo and dizziness, causing me to stumble or fall.
  • A terrifying sensation of being pulled upward into space, feeling the need to hold onto furniture to prevent "flying away."

Top 10 Things That Helped Me in Withdrawal:

  1. Eat well and stay hydrated. Force yourself to eat and choose whole, unprocessed foods. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  2. Exercise when possible, even short walks—it helps with sleep and muscle movement.
  3. Take hot baths and showers to ease muscle pain and promote relaxation.
  4. Distract yourself from the pain—TV worked wonders for me when I was too sick to read.
  5. Practice positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you’re strong enough to keep going.
  6. Believe in your body’s ability to heal.
  7. Realize that adding more drugs won’t help—withdrawal is about patience and persistence.
  8. Pray or meditate to find inner peace.
  9. Journal or blog your progress to see how far you’ve come and maintain positivity.
  10. Stay close to friends and loved ones. Their love and support are invaluable during this long, lonely journey.

I want to encourage everyone to take this one day at a time and trust that healing is absolutely possible.

Happy healing, everyone!
